Who is Fitzy Fox by Amelia Trompf: The making of a book trailer

Hi Folks and welcome to the Who Is Fitzy Fox Blog tour.
I am so delighted to bring this to you in reading land, as this book has been delighting us for a few weeks now.

We highly recommend it for ages 4-8, especially with Christmas coming up. Fitzy Fox's search for his identity, takes him through some truly wonderful places in Melbourne and beyond, and we absolutely loved reading it. The illustrations were so fantastic we want them in print form. Amelia and Jennifer have stopped by to give us the skinny on how they made their wonderful book trailer.

Until next time folks, enjoy.

The Making of a Book Trailer

Who is Fitzy Fox? is a newly released debut picture book written by Amelia Trompf and illustrated by Jennifer Bruce. When Amelia started researching ways to help promote her book, she discovered the wonderful world of book trailers and decided she would like one for her book! Here Amelia and Simon Cottee (the book trailer’s animator) talk about how the book trailer came into being.

Amelia, can you tell us how about your book trailer first came about?

With the release of my debut picture book Who is Fitzy Fox? being imminent, I have been frantically trying to do a crash course in picture book marketing and for me, one very pleasant discovery was the existence of book trailers. Of course I knew about movie trailers but not book trailers!
I decided that I would have a go at creating one for Who is Fitzy Fox? so I started searching the Internet for ideas.
I did an online video-making course and put together a fairly simply slideshow video with a few whizz (but definitely amateur) bang animations. I then started to think about the soundtrack. Sitting in my son’s toddler music class listening to the teacher, Erynne Binns, soothing the crazy little folk at the end of the class by beautifully singing The Lion Sleeps Tonight, I suddenly though how brilliant it would be if she could write a song for the trailer. She produced a song way beyond my expectations that added another dimension and perspective to the story. I was thrilled; I love it when creative people get inspired and take a project to a different level.

After I heard the song, however, I was in a quandary. The song Erynne had written was too beautiful for my simple little slideshow video and trying to get the slides to fit the timing of the song was doing my head in. So I started asking around for anyone who could make simple animations. I considered online animators who are very cheap but didn’t want to send the illustrations to someone overseas that I didn’t know. Then one night as I lay awake listening to the snores of my husband, I suddenly remembered that he had a cousin who was an animator in Canada. I had only met my husband’s cousin once when he was a teenager and conscious that my project was very small, I was a little tentative about asking him but thankfully he agreed. I sent him the video I had already made to give him some ideas but just like Erynne, he created something way beyond my expectations and again added his own perspective.

Simon, can you tell us a bit about the creative process of making a book trailer?

G'day Guys! My names Simon Cottee and I put together the animated trailer for the beautiful book Who is Fitzy Fox?. Here is a brief rundown of the creative process that went into it.
First, Amelia provided me with her story and the beautiful illustrations along with the song What Floats for You by Erynn Brinns. The trailer came together easily because of Erynn's song! It has a great underlying rhythm to it, so I found the editing just needed to hit that rhythm and it would feel good. I'll admit I came to that conclusion much later than I should of, as on reflection it's so obvious (a good learning moment for me)!

The fact that Jennifer's illustrations had such character and colour to them also made my job really easy. I sourced her original HD artwork for most of the trailer and modified them here and there to create some movement (painting out characters and separating them from the backgrounds) and in a few cases used them as a reference to create some new more "animated" movements. To animate this I used a digital animation software called TVPaint where I drew frame by frame with a Wacom tablet into the computer. I compiled it all together in the software called After Effects, which I also used to make some multiplane camera moves, which create a bit of depth. So the trailer is basically a montage of moments from the story, as I attempted to give a general feel for the book, but also not give too much away.
It was one of those rare projects where it all came together without a struggle and left me feeling relaxed and calm. What a pleasure!

Besides writing, Amelia Trompf teaches part-time and spends the rest of the time with her young son who luckily loves reading as much as she does. They spend many hours at the local libraries reading books together. Wouldn’t it be wonderful for Amelia’s son to discover mummy wrote a picture book on the library shelf next time they go!

Jennifer Bruce grew up in Dunblane in Scotland. She loved reading and drawing when she was young and particularly liked drawing animals. After finishing school, she went to Art College and then worked as a jeweller and a creative skills instructor in a hospital as well as a drawing tutor. Who is Fitzy Fox? is the first book Jennifer has illustrated and she had great fun creating the character of Fitzy Fox and drawing the places in Melbourne and London that he visits.

Dot writes Grandma a card, but misses the post with all the sticking and pasting that she got caught up in.

Dot decides to try to get some animals to send her letter for her, but none of them are interested.
She eventually decides to dig her way to London, oh dear, she got a far as the garden.

Dot emerges from her tunnel to find Grandma and all her cousins, arrive in a Big Red London Bus.

Dot to Dot, wish each other a happy birthday....

But that's not the end of the story.....

FLIP

As in flip the book over and start from the end that is now the beginning.

Grandma Dot wants to see her granddaughter for their birthday, so she hops a plain and travels to Beijing, then Mumbai, then Rome, all along collecting cousins and relatives and exploring the wonderful cities as she goes, until she finally lands in New York, to surprise her granddaughter Dot with a wonderful party full of family and friends.

Billy And Monster's Golden Christmas

Got some news for you today.
My buddy David Chuka has released a book just in time for Christmas.

Billy and Monster's Golden Christmas

Billy and Monster’s Golden Christmas is now available to download on Amazon.

I had the pleasure to be interviewed on David’s blog last year and it was fun answering his questions. You can actually read the full interview here.

In this book, which is the fifth instalment in his bestselling series – The Adventures of Billy and Monster – David addresses that scenario we sometimes face during the Christmas: What do we do when we get a gift we don’t really like.

Billy gets a golden pen from Uncle Leland from England while his cousin Bob gets a Monster truck. Billy’s doesn't show any gratitude and his attitude makes his Dad mad and his uncle sad. An incident at the refrigerator while reaching for Grandma’s chocolate caramel pecan pie leads Billy filled with snow and colourful monsters. While he learns about one of the most important things about Christmas.
This sounds very cool so hop on over to check it out just in time for Christmas.

Kid Lit Blog Hop #43 Review Paw Prints And The Itchy Spots.

Welcome back to the Kid Lit Blog Hop #43

* As with July, we will be hosting only one Hop in the month of August. PLUS, we will be keeping the Hop open for 2 weeks instead of 1 week. Also, please be aware that as hostesses, we will do the best we can to make sure that at least ONE of us visits each link and says Hello! *

We continue to develop a dynamic and engaged community of children's books bloggers, authors, publishers, and publicists. So, you are always more than welcome to join us by popping in a post and hopping around to meet some of your fellow Kid Lit bloggers and authors!

Today I want to share with you another awesome book by the very talented Sarah Mounsey.

I have reviewed Sarah's first two books. To check out those links,

Eddie is covered from top to toe in lots and lots of itchy red spots!. How did they get there? And how can he stop scratching them? His mischievous friend William and his lovable dog Oscar come to the rescue again. But how long will it take them to itch their way out of another spot of bother?

Our Review:
Eddie is back again with another fun filled escapade. This time, Eddie wakes with a big red spot on his nose, but wait, there's more, hundreds more spots to be precise. Poor Eddy. His dog Oscar offers some consolation by teaching Eddie how to do a really good scratch, but poor Eddie is still itchy.

Enter William, Eddie's clever and sometimes full of mischief friend, who has just the remedy, and well, I would tell you but that would give it away... Williams remedy lands Eddie in a world it of itchiness, so they resort to the car wash and a fire engine to help Eddie relieve his itchy scratchies, but nothing works. Well, not until Mum saves the day, dabbing special lotion on every single one of Eddie's itchy spots.
Can you guess Eddie's ailment, and as we know with any good itch, ( if there is such a thing) they are quite contagious.  Eddie finally finds some relief, but he leaves a trail of itchy friends behind him.

Once again another delightful story by the fabulous Sarah Mounsey. Jade Fangs illustrations are just fantastic, bringing Eddie's predicament to true to life that it will leave you itching and scratching all the way to the end.

We LOVED IT.  5 stars from us.

Happy hopping folks.

The illustrations are delightful and [my son] insisted that we stop to discuss some of them along the way. There was more than one “wow!” over a picture of the mite climbing a dandelion." ~ Prenatal to Parenting

A Different Kind Of Safari Book Blast

A Different Kind of Safari Helen Hipp

About the Book

Title: A Different Kind of Safari | Author: Helen C. Hipp | Publication Date: March 19, 2013 | Publisher: A Different Kind of Safari LLC | Pages: 32 | Recommended Ages: 5 to 10 Summary: What do you need to feel happy about being different? Based loosely on real life experiences, this heartwarming and powerful book illustrates how self-awareness, and courage help a young boy named Raymond learn the difference between seeing things as they appear to be and seeing things as they are. Feeling "different and lonely" Raymond befriends a hippo while on Safari in Africa. Unlike other grey hippos, this hippo is pink. Ray is soon carried into a world beyond labels and challenging assumptions. You will never guess what happens next!

The Inspiration Behind the Story by Helen Hipp

A Different Kind of Safari inside page Inspired by real-life adventure, the story behind the story unfolded when I went on an African safari back in 2001. The trip was lead by my father whose dream was to share the safari experience with his family. Little did I know that this trip was going to incite me to write a children’s adventure book but it did. The storyline made it appearance when my family spotted a pod of hippos and one was pink! My son Ray fourteen at the time immediately named her “Rosie”. Curious and wanting to learn more about this hippo we asked the guide many questions about hippos and hippo behavior. Specifically I wanted to know why the pink hippo stood so far outside of her pod. The familiarity of the guides answer took me by surprise, he explained that “Rosie” was tolerated but not necessarily accepted by the herd because of her differences. As a parent of a child with special needs I immediately felt a strong affiliation with Rosie’s situation as did my son Ray who has experienced his own challenges with acceptance. Inspired, I decided to share the story with the world by weaving them into a children's adventure book that celebrates differences. The book is entitled “A Different Kind of Safari”. Find out what you can learn from Rosie the pink hippo, and how you can share those lessons with the children in your life.

Kid Lit Blog Hop #42 Australian Showcase

Welcome back to the Kid Lit Blog Hop #42

As its summer holidays for my northern hemisphere friends, everyone is taking a bit of a break, so I though it would be a good time to do a bit of an Australian Showcase.

I review for a fabulous kids book site called Creative Kids Tales.

This is a great sight run by the lovely Georgie. It has loads of information, as well as author spotlights and a radio show interviewing some very cool Aussie author icons.

All of the books I receive are Australian, including some wonderful books penned by Indigenous Aussie's. I thought it would be a great opportunity to show you what's going on down under in the publishing world.

I hope you enjoy, happy hopping.

Destiny And Faith Book Blast

Mother Daughter Book Reviews is pleased to be coordinating this Book Blast on behalf of author Jourden Cleghorn who writes under the pen name of Teddy O'Malley.

Jourden was recently involved in a serious automobile accident resulting in severe injuries just days after her new book, Destiny and Faith Go To Twincentric Academy, was published in May 2014. The indie author community has come together to support this young author/illustrator during this challenging time. Please read below to see what you can do to help in a small way. Destiny and Faith by Teddy O'Malley

About the Book

Title: Destiny and Faith Go To Twincentric Academy | Author: Teddy O'Malley | Publication Date: May 11, 2014 | Publisher: Independent | Pages: 62 | Recommended Ages: 6 to 10 Summary: Destiny and Faith are going into second grade and their mom has a great idea. She's going to send them to a school for twins! They're not sure whether to be excited or terrified. Come join them and see what happens! AmazonGoodreads

The Buzz

"Anyone who's tried to buy a book or birthday card for a child who isn't white will know how few are available. Golden hair and blue eyes rule. I was delighted by Destiny and Faith, who are mixed race/bi-racial, perfect for some children very close to me. However, let me quickly say that this is a story for all children. A school for twins is such a great idea and Destiny and Faith's adventures have a universal message about friendship and learning how to get along with each other. This would also be a good book for actual twins as some of the issues that arise in twin relationships come up in the story." ~ 5 Star Review, Mary Josephina Cade, Amazon

"I just finished reading this book. I got it for my daughter and decided to read it myself. It is so ORIGINAL and totally ADORABLE! A MUST READ for young children looking to read their FIRST CHAPTER BOOK! My daughter LOVES it!! I highly recommend this book!! " ~ 5 Star Review, radams, Amazon

"A great story for young girls, with lots of fun dialogue. Accompanied throughout by black and white drawings. These capture the body language and expressions of the different characters perfectly. Looking forward to more in the Destiny and Faith series." ~ 5 Star Review, M.J. Kinsman, Amazon

How You Can Help

On Thursday, May 15, 2014, Jourden was the passenger in a small car when a much larger truck turned in front of them. She suffered severe injuries as a result of this accident including a cracked sternum, punctured lung, broken arm, and broken foot. Unforutnately, the nature and severity of Jourden's injuries have limited her ability to promote her books effectively. I was very moved when I was approached by a member of the Facebook group, "Fun-tastic Children’s Books " (of which Jourden is an active member) to help this young author. This wonderful group took it upon themselves to promote Jourden’s books on her behalf. They bought, reviewed, tweeted and shared her books throughout social media and are sponsoring (along with MDBR) the giveaway below. If you should choose to enter the giveaway below (open worldwide), you will see an option to earn 10 extra entries in the giveaway by purchasing a copy of Teddy O'Malley's latest book, Destiny and Faith Go To Twincentric Academy from Amazon for only 99 cents. I hope you will consider helping out the author in this small way. Of note, during her recovery, Jourden found the inspiration for another children’s book. It will be about a child recovering from a car crash and having to cope with learning to write with the opposite hand, and other hardships that must be overcome during the healing process. Jourden usually writes with her right hand, but plans to illustrate the book using her left. She wants to show that hardships can be overcome if one does not give up.

About the Author: Angela Muse

Angela Muse, Author  Angela Muse was born in California to a military family. This meant that she got used to being the "new kid" in school every couple of years. It was hard trying to make new friends, but Angela discovered she had a knack for writing. In high school Angela began writing poetry and song lyrics. Narrated Video of How Andrew Got His Spots

MY  REVIEW

Andrew the Giraffe is a very tall calf, but with his snow white coat, he feels he doesn't belong. He sets about to find his spots and he happens upon a lady bird.  Andrew asks the little beetle how she got her spots, but when he finds they are kisses from a fairy, he leaves feeling blue. Off he journeys and along the way he meets a leopard. When Andrew asks him how he got his spots the leopard tells him they came from high above, and fell from the sky in the form of raindrops. Poor Andrew, he doesn't know what to do, he continues on, still no closer to finding a way to gain his spots. Next he happens upon an owl, and when he questions her the owl answers that a strong wind blew and in they flew.
Andrew doesn't know how to find his spots, so in despair he lies down upon the ground to take a nap. Little does he know that the sun peaking through the trees bathes him in a golden glow. It tans his skin and his spots begin to show. Andrew awakes the wonderful site and he finally gets his spots.

This has a lovely rhythm and rhyme to it, as we journey along with poor Andrew in his quest for his spots. The water colour illustrations matched this story so beautifully as the simple brush strokes really bring to life how each animal got their spots. We thoroughly enjoyed this simple and sweet story and would recommend it for children aged 3-6.

About the Author: Louise Lintvelt

Louise LintveltI am from South Africa and I live in a city called Pretoria. I am a Chemical Engineer by day and a children’s book writer by night. I am married to a wonderful man and we have a beautiful two year old daughter called Allegra. I love writing stories for my daughter, who is a constant inspiration. I have always loved reading. My childhood was filled with books and you would often find me crouched the corner of my room devouring the pages of my favourite book. I lived for Tuesday mornings as this would bring with it the excitement of a trip to the local library for story hour and the opportunity to take home a new book. I was the local librarian’s worst nightmare. I would arrive a few minutes early to check that she had not mistakenly chosen a book that had already been read in story hour. I was a very bossy three year old with an insatiable appetite for books! This has not really changed much in the last twenty seven years. Dr. Seuss was my absolute favourite and to say that my copy of One, Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish was well read would be an understatement. When it comes to writing, my daughter is my biggest inspiration. I love seeing her face light up with excitement when we sit down to read a book before bedtime. My daughter was fascinated by giraffes after we went on a safari trip in late 2012. This planted the seed for my picture book called How Andrew Got His Spots which is a rhyming adaptation of a story I originally wrote in the third grade. My daughter has since grown into a healthy two year old with a passion for aircraft which was the inspiration for writing Goodnight, Sleep tight, What a Wonderful Flight. I am sure that there are many parents in the world (myself included), who are quite decidedly sick and tired of reading the same favourite picture book night after night. I believe that the words of Oscar Wilde best describe how children should feel about picture books when he said, If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all. Happy Reading!
