Well, I have been a bit busy with a new born, and writing a new manuscript, so I thought I would just share what is currently on my reading pile.

There is a decided circus theme/magician theme, which is all great research for my latest project.

Yep, I did it. I took the Piboidmo challenge again this year.
If you are wondering what it is, its the brain child of Tara Lazar.  We are a huge fan of her books. You can  Check them out here

Her idea was to help inspire people to come up with 30 ideas to then convert into picture books.  During the month of November, she collaborates with the best and most current in the picture book industry and gets them to impart their wisdom.
I managed to make 30 ideas for new picture books in the month of November.

About 28 of them stink, but that doesn't matter.

I committed to it.

And I did it with a newborn in tow!!!

Hurrahhh

Now to make something of them.... That is my next challenge.

Or simply use some of my current ideas and re-invent them.

That is the beauty of the challenge.  So much inspiration on a daily basis.

If you haven't hopped over to Tara Lazar's Blog
Do yourself a favor and hop on over.

We love her books and she has been an inspiration.

Happy Hopping folks

Today, I am going to embark on a book that is fairly well known in the universe, but I am keen for our blogger community's take on it.

I can't seem to be able to save a cover photo, so It will have to just be the link

 by Lemony Snicket

Description from Amazon
In a fading town, far from anyone he knew or trusted, a young Lemony Snicket began his apprenticeship in an organization nobody knows about. He started by asking questions that shouldn't have been on his mind. Now he has written an account that should not be published, in four volumes that shouldn't be read. This is the first volume.

This starts out with a great deal of intrigue when Snicket finds himself in a cafĂ© with people he calls his parents, but things are not what they seem. As I am a huge fan of mystery in any form, I am naturally taken in.  I actually started reading this as a research endeavour, for a steam punkish middle grade that I am intending on writing as my next project.

Snicket is certainly famous for this kind of genre, so I thought I would read the best in the business.  Interesting how the writer in me, became instantly critical.

The story for me, meandered along, with excessive details, and descriptions I found myself getting very tired with. Lemony is apprenticed to an eccentric women, who seem to do nothing but want to control him, and teach him little, and she constantly uses large words then explains them, which felt so jolting and lesson like.

I did like the quirkiness of the mystery, but as the book drew to a close, I was 300 pages in and no wiser as to what was happening.  It set up for a second book very much so, which has been published, but I couldn't help wondering, what kid would read this at the age of 10, with all that I have mentioned so far.

The illustration throughout were simple and kitchy, which I enjoy, but didn't really add very much to the story for me.

So, this is not so much review, but a research project.

How would this story captivate children, especially reluctant readers, and why are these kinds of books even pitched to kids.

It is a mystery to me, so if anyone has kids that love these books, I would love to hear it.

Until then folks, happy hopping.

Today I have a book review by a fantastic author that I have come to admire greatly.

Edward Trayer, writing under the pen name of Billy Bob Buttons, also runs the Wishing Shelf Independent Book awards, of which Frankie Dupont book 1 won the silver award for 2014
Check It Out

Edward won the 2014 People Book Prize Uk, and he does amazing book tours throughout the UK, independently promoting his books.

His success is inspiring.  Now onto the book.

Description from Amazon

My name is Tiffany Sparrow and my job is to slay spooks. It can be messy work, but I enjoy it. Mostly. I get to do a lot of travelling which is fun, but often just to crumbling tombs and spidery cellars. My mum was a slayer too; and so was my grandmother. I miss them terribly. They were killed, you see, by Grimdorf the warlock, so now there's only me and my old grandad left. But the word on Voodoo street is... GRIMDORF'S BACK! And he's brought a few of his pals with him.

My Review
Billy Bob Buttons has done it again, with this fast paced, action packed, super engaging story for middle grade readers. Tiffany Sparrow is not your average girl. She is the only scythe wielding, but kicking, spook slayer left in Devil's Ash since her mum and grandmother were will killed by Grimdorf, the warlock. She lives with her gramps who gives a new meaning to gourmet cooking, and is mostly happy. That is until she has a run in with Atilla The Hun, a rather pesky pizza eating spook, at the Crusty Crypt Inn and learns that Grimdorf is BACK. Tiffany knows that's just not possible.

Her mum and grandma may have perished at Lurch Manor during their shown down with Grimdorf, but they did eliminate him. Or so the townsfolk and her gramps thought. Tiffany is no longer so sure. A strange boy spook keeps visiting her, giving her odd clues as to Grimdorf's intentions.

Tiffany realises that she has one battle royale on her hands when spooks, who should be all mist and goo, are starting to actually throw things at her. If she is going to keep her reputation as well as free Devil's Ash from her arch nemesis, she will have keep her wits about her, and Hell's Talon of course, her trusty scythe. Oh did I mention, Grimdorf stole it from her.

A fun and engaging story, that will keep even the most reluctant reader on the edge of their seat. I am fast becoming a firm fan of Billy Bob Buttons.

Happy Hopping everyone and enjoy the Hop!

This week, I found a delightful book to share

Dot to Dot
By Malcolm Cossons
Pictures by Neil Stevens

Dot and her grandmother share a birthday, but dot lives in London and Grandma lives in New York.
Dot writes Grandma a card, but misses the post with all the sticking and pasting that she got caught up in.

Dot decides to try to get some animals to send her letter for her, but none of them are interested.
She eventually decides to dig her way to London, oh dear, she got a far as the garden.

Dot emerges from her tunnel to find Grandma and all her cousins, arrive in a Big Red London Bus.

Dot to Dot, wish each other a happy birthday....

But that's not the end of the story.....

FLIP

As in flip the book over and start from the end that is now the beginning.

Grandma Dot wants to see her granddaughter for their birthday, so she hops a plain and travels to Beijing, then Mumbai, then Rome, all along collecting cousins and relatives and exploring the wonderful cities as she goes, until she finally lands in New York, to surprise her granddaughter Dot with a wonderful party full of family and friends.

I have to say, I love this book and so does Gigi.  The illustrations are totally eye catching and I love this sweet story of Dot and Dot uniting, for their birthdays.

What can I say, you had me at FLIP...

We recommend this one, now off you hop!!!!!!

 Happy Birthday Dr Seuss

Okay, so I am once again late to the party. You know I confessed in an earlier post, I never read Dr Seuss until a few months ago.

Well, we are mad for him now and it happens to have been his birthday this week.

So, I thought myself so clever when I went to our local Aldi, because they advertised they had Dr Seuss on sale.

I rock up, grab as many as affordable and get home.....

I start reading them to Gigi....

Hmm ... The Rhyme is not always great...

Hang on!!!!

Okay, so I don't know every Dr Seuss title, but I realised, actually these are not actually his work at all.

They are books based on the Cat In A Hat cartoon, that Gigi actually loves and yes they are a different author and illustrator as we know Dr Seuss passed many years ago.

I was skeptical and a little put out that I had not done my research.  I just figured they didn't have all his well known titles on sale but his lesser known instead.

Anyway, the good news is, Gigi still loves the books and they are actually very educational.

They are lengthy, but that is okay as she is now right into chapter books at 3.5. I didn't realise how much she would actually learn from them.

I haven't given up on my search for his old favourites and our re-use it baby market is coming up soon.  I will be taking a trip to visit my favourite second hand book seller, to find some more Dr Seuss classics.

Until then, I do recommend the new books and I heard on the grape vine that a new Dr Seuss will be released posthumously.

We can't wait.

Until then folks, happy hopping.....

We have discovered this amazing author

Are you ready for it...

No really, you will be amazed at this one...

Okay, so I am only about 40 years late to the party....

Gigi and I have just discovered...

Amazon link

Okay, I can hear the sniggers.... But in my defence, we never read this as kids, and Gigi is only 3.5, so although we have read One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, this is the first chapter book that she has sat through the entire 72 pages, and now wants to read it every night.

What strikes me about Horton is the underlying message.  Although it is actually teaching a lesson, it is done in such a way that I am utterly in love with this book.

Dr Seuss is of course famous for his rhyme and I love it, but you know what, even he had trouble with the pacing in a couple of areas.

I have been studying how important the beat and rhythm of a rhyming picture books are, as I have been writing a few of my own over the past year.

There are a couple of places in Horton Hears A Who, where I trip up and I feel like the beat is off.

However, after reading this night after night, I am utterly convinced Dr Seuss is a genius. I now know how difficult it is to make a sentence rhyme that isn't forced, and I can tell you, it is really really hard.

I only have one rhyming picture book in my portfolio and I may never ever write another one....

We loved this book so much we decided to get the movie. It is outrageous and exciting and full of details you could never have imagined, but for me, I just wanted something closer to the book.

The beauty of the rhyme and rhythm to me are totally lost. My opinion, but there you have it.

We picked up Horton at our local baby market, where there is a second hand book seller. We intend to collect all the Dr Seuss we can get our hands on, so what say you all.

What should we read next?!!!!!

Happy Hopping everyone and enjoy the Hop!

Kid Lit Blog Hop

Today I have a few books to share with you, that came from our Christmas list.

Link

Description From Booktopia:

A laugh-aloud picture book celebrating nannas everywhere from a talented author and illustrator team.

Some nannas dress in pink when they jog around the track.
But my nanna is a ninja … so she dresses up in black.
All nannas are different.
But what if your nanna was really different?
What if your nanna was a ninja?

This fun, poetic picture book portrays the many different guises, faces and personalities that nannas can have and demonstrates the significance of their role in the modern family.

Our Thoughts:

Gigi loved this book from the first read. The rhyme is fantastic, and it is loads of fun to see a Nanny being a ninja. We had to have it on our Christmas list.  I don't know any kid that wouldn't enjoy this book.

Next we have:

Description From Amazon:

This innovative and wildly funny read-aloud by award-winning humorist/actor B.J. Novak will turn any reader into a comedian.

You might think a book with no pictures seems boring and serious. Except . . . here's how books work. Everything written on the page has to be said by the person reading it aloud. Even if the words say . . .

BLORK. Or BLUURF.

Even if the words are a preposterous song about eating ants for breakfast, or just a list of astonishingly goofy sounds like BLAGGITY BLAGGITY and GLIBBITY GLOBBITY.

We saw the Youtube of B.J Novak reading this to a crowd and we decided to give it a go.  With only one child in the audience, it took a little longer for her to warm to it, because, of course there were no pictures.  Once she realised it was really very funny to hear mum and dad say those words, it was a hit.

I think this is ingenious and a great way to get kids to learn using auditory, as opposed to visual.

And next:
Description From Amazon:
What’s big, blue, bossy, and turns up uninvited?
A slightly annoying elephant, of course!

Our Thoughts:

This is a hoot of a book. It is a cautionary tale about always reading the labels and every page has more mayhem that Gigi just loves.  I recommend for anyone who loves a really silly book.

Last but not least:

Link

Description From Amazon:
Inspired by the evil villains and innocent damsels of silent movies, Willems tells the tale of a hungry fox who invites a plump goose to dinner. As with the beloved Pigeon books, kids will be calling out the signature refrain and begging for repeated readings. The funny details in the full-color illustrations by three-time Caldecott Honoree Mo Willems will bring nonstop laughter to story time.

Our Thoughts:

Firstly the noir style, love it, the simple journey with mummy chicken, hilarious, the ending, in true Willems style, very naughty.  Gigi is partial to the odd macabre humour, and what kid wouldn't be with a mother like myself,  he he.

That's all folks, off you hop!!!!

Today I have a wonderful new book, from an Australian Independent Author.

Digby's Moon Mission

By Renee Price
Illustrated by Anil Tortop

Digby Fixit awakes in the sleepiest part of the night with a fright, asking an age old question. "Why is the dark so dark?"  Peering out his window, he finds the answer in a flash. The moon is so banana thin it barely makes a glimmer.

Well, lucky Digby Fixit is on the case. He sets about a clever plan involving all his friends. A mighty cooking extravaganza begins with muffin treats, kiwi tarts, thausage rolls and wonton soup, to name a few. By weeks end, the gang are ready and they load the catapult in Digby's yard. With a cheer, they send their sumptuous feast towards the moon.

Night after night, Digby checks the lunar phases with his trusty measuring tape. By seven sleepless nights, voila, the moon is a plump as a pie, lighting the sky. Digby lays content in his bed, as the dark is no longer so dark. But wait. "What is that noise and why is it so noisy?" Digby ponders.....

This was a delightful moon mission book with a twist. When I first read the title, I thought Digby would be visiting the moon.  Upon reading, we realised that the moon's well being, was actually Digby's mission.  This was a very clever way of introducing words that have dual meanings. The story is spliced with simple rhyme that kids will no doubt enjoy, as they journey with Digby and his friends in their mission to plump up the moon. I absolutely loved the illustration style and with each delicious new page, I felt my tummy rumbling.  Young children seem to be enamoured with the moon in all its phases, so I loved the premise of this book.  It gives a great talking point for all those little star gazers out there.

What impresses me more about his book is that the author funded the entire production through crowd funding.  It just goes to show that dreams can come true, and those of us who long to see our words in little hands, can find a way.

No off you hop!!!!

Kid Lit Blog Hop #46

Welcome back to the Kid Lit Blog Hop #46

It is no secret that I have a major obsession with middle grade mysteries, so when I saw this one on Amazon, I snaffled it up

The Curious Disappearance of Professor Brown
by Tim Flanagan and illustrations by Dylan Gibson.

I was not disappointed.

18 year old Lawrence Pinkley is Whitby's top private detective. Well actually he is the only private detective, complete with wardrobe of beige trenchcoats and trilby hats. When his father dies and leaves him a large inheritance, Lawrence can't touch it until he runs PIG for 5 years. ( Pinkley Investigation Group) So he sets out to follow in his father's footsteps and what follows is a laugh out loud adventure, with a cast of characters whose names often had me chortling.

When Russet Brown arrives on Pinkley's door step, desperate to find her father Professor Brown, little does Lawrence know just how much of pumpkin of an investigation he has landed in. Mysterious notes begin finding their way into his office, and two thugs are watching his every move. Lawrence soon learns that this private detective gig is not as easy as he thought and he finds himself in one huge pickle, but not to worry. With a little help from some new friends, our dashing detective outsmarts the crooks and lives to investigate another day, just in time for his date with the lovely Vicky, his cafe crush.

This was one fun mystery, that had me laughing all the way to the end. I absolutely loved the colour illustrations by Dylan Gibson and found myself taking extra time to study each one, with their intricate and often hilarious details. I would recommend this to upper middle grade 12+ due to some of the events included and I am certainly looking forward to the next Lawrence Pinkley mystery.

Happy Hopping folks
