Sir Princess Petra's Talent: Blog Tour and Review

Welcome to Sir Princess Petra's Talent Blog Tour
By Dianne Mae Robinson

We are so delighted to be back joining in this blog tour and reviewing Dianne's sequel.

For anyone who missed our review of book one, hop on over:

Description:

Sir Princess Petra has already proven she is a kind and noble knight. This, however, does not please the king and queen---they want her to behave like a princess and forget this
silly knight nonsense of hers! But when the king writes a new rule in the royal rule book that requires her to attend Talent School and acquire a princess talent certificate or suffer the spell of the royal magician, Petra, reluctantly, agrees to go. But who could have guessed what Sir Princess Petra’s Talent would be?

Our Review:

We journey back to the land of Pen Pieyu, with the delightful Sir Princess Petra. I really like that Ms Robinson took the time to familiarise a new reader with Petra's antics from book 1.
There have been many celebrations since Petra's momentous taming the fire breathing dragon Snarls, who subsequently has become the Royal Barbeque expert. I love it. he he. But once again our brave Petra finds herself up against the Royal Rule Book.  The kind and queen in a desperate attempt to rid their young princess of all this silly Knightlyness, decree that Petra must obtain a talent from the Land Of Lost Donkeys.
Well, Petra is not perturbed. Off she goes and along her journey she is challenged by a knight with quite the penchant for pink. He is very intent on preventing her from obtaining her talent certificate. Why, I can  not tell you, but it is quite hilarious. The delightful Petra always finds a way to befriend her foes and the odd pink knight, whom is called Prince Duce Crablips accompanies her to Talent School. There King Asterman does his best to get Petra to do some very silly talents like Etiquette, or Crochet, or Fainting Fast, or Cloak Sewing or worst of all in our fiercely independent princess's opinion, Preparing To Be Engaged School. Yuk! (That was from Petra not me he he)
But Petra can't be hoodwinked the way everyone who encounters Bograt the Bogwitch is. No Petra will not have a bar of all those other silly things, she wants to attend Writing School.
Petra sets to work and with her vivid imagination she writes a most excellent poem. Only after 100 pulled faces, does King Asterman ascends to give her her Writing Certificate.
Hurrah, Petra has obtained her talent, but on the way, the adventure in her spirit rears up and Petra convinces Prince Duce and Snarls to accompany her into The Vast Wilderness.
There they meet the furry Ganutes, who reveal to Petra that she is infact not the first to venture into their lands. The irrepressive Bograt The Bogwitch has gone before them. Well, this is great news to Petra, as that is one of the Royal Rules that entitles the person to become a Knight of The Royal Court, imagine it.
So Petra returns to her kingdom and insists that Bograt be given the title she has well earned, and a great celebration is in order. But not before Petra must display her talent.
Here is the most enchanting part of the story.
Petra tells a beautiful tale, taught to her by her Nanny before she went off seeking fortune. Petra mesmorises them all with her tale and thus, the art of story telling has returned to the Land Of Pen Pieyu.

This was a wonderful story, where we see Petra's beautiful personality develop even further. I absolutely adore Petra's innocent antics, making this a super clean and appropriate read for children aged 5-8. I loved the story that Petra told, it was magical and I can definitely see a spin off book., hehe. The illustrations throughout the book again are enchanting.
We loved it, and give this second book in Ms Robinson's tales, 5 stars.

Rv: Humpfree The Humpless Camel by Julia Dweck

Today I am delighted to bring you another awesome pre-release from Julia Dweck

Humpfree
The Humpless Camel

Description from Amazon:

“Now Humpfree Camel had no humps.
His back was free of any lumps.
While others had one bump or two,
Just where were Humpfree’s? No one knew.”

Humpfree’s back is as flat as a pancake and he’s not taking it lying down. He’s off on a wild search looking for his humps, but there are lots of bumps along the way. What would you do if you were a humpless, bumpless camel?

Readers will enjoy the humor and rhyme of this adventure, based on scientists’ true discovery of a new flat back camel species in East Africa. Young explorers will be fascinated by Mrs. Dweck’s true and amazing fun facts about camels to extend the learning. It all adds up to one edutaining adventure for young readers.

Our Review:
Humpfree is yet another delightful rhyming digital picture book that had us chortling at every turn of the page.
When Humpfree realises he doesn't have any lumps he puts his detective skills to the test. He tries all manor of hump substitutes including, balloons, burlap bags, sand bags, boulders, porcupines, even feathers, but none of his bumps will stay as permanent humps.
Just when Humpfree is about to give up in despair, he is met by a scientist who discovers that Humpfree is not just any camel, he is a rare, HUMPLESS breed, who could ever imagine.
There is a lovely lesson in accepting yourself as the wonderfully unique being that you are and I for one am so delighted to be able to share this with toddler. Who by the way, sat through the entire book, eyes glued to the page.

Another 5 stars from us....

But wait, Humpfree is not even released yet, he he.

But he is available for pre-order until October 5.

The Kings Ransom RV and Blog Tour

Young Knights of the Round Table Blog Tour Button

About the Book

The King's Ransom by Cheryl Carpinello

Title: Young Knights of the Round Table: The King's Ransom Author: Cheryl Carpinello Publication Date (Kindle): May, 2012 Publisher: MuseItUp Publishing Number of pages: 84 Recommended age: 9+ Summary (Amazon):
In medieval Wales, eleven-year-old Prince Gavin, thirteen-year-old orphan Philip, and fifteen-year-old blacksmith's apprentice Bryan are brought together in friendship by one they call the Wild Man. When an advisor to the king is killed and a jewelled medallion is stolen from the king’s treasury, the Wild Man is accused of the theft and murder. Filled with disbelief at the arrest of the Wild Man, the three friends embark upon a knight’s quest to save their friend’s life. To succeed, the three must confront their fears and insecurities, and one of them will have to disclose the biggest secret of all. Join Gavin, Philip, and Bryan on their quest and share the adventures that await them in the land of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.

My Review:

We begin the adventure first with Gavin, a young prince, fearful of his ability to fulfil his duty to his King. Then we meet Philip, a young boy orphan boy who lost his entire family to a dreadful blight. Philip, seeks refuge in the village that Gavin and his family rule over. Last but not least we meet Bryan, a young man who dreams of becoming a Knight, who has to accept his station in life and work hard to become a Blacksmith. Gavin, Philip and Bryan, become fast friends, united in their desire become expert swordsman. Each of the three, unwittingly befriend a mysterious man new to the village. "The Wild" man has no station in life and is of no one of consequence to anyone in the village. He seems to know an awful lot about how to handle a sword, patiently instructing the three each night as they practise.

That is until the day he is accused of the theft of "The Kings Ransom", a gold  medallion, rumoured to be impart great power to anyone who in possession of it. The theft alone was bad enough, but a beloved an trusted servant to the king was also killed during the theft.
Gavin, Philip and Bryan unite in their quest to clear the "Wild Man's" name, but to do that they must discover the identity of the real murderer and thief.
Each of the boys, must overcome their fears and demonstrate great courage, in order to fulfil their part on the quest to bring the murderer to justice.
This was a delightful rollercoaster of a read, taking us on a journey with each of the characters. There were moments of great sadness, where I felt so wholeheartedly for the characters and their situations.  Ms Carpinello has woven a wonderful tale of facing your fears, and finding the courage within, as each character plays their part in solving the crime.
I loved the twist at the end, and Ms Carpinello weaves in her vast knowledge of King Arthur and the legendary knights of the round table so wonderfully.
This was a quick read, which I recommend to 10+ due to some of the vivid imagery and mild language.

The Buzz

"The King's Ransom is a fast-moving story, a tale of knights and castles and villains. As Gavin, Phillip, and Bryan set about to save their friend, the reader is brought vividly into the medieval world of King Arthur. There is just the right balance of action and character development to entice young readers and reluctant readers to pick this book up, as was the author's intent. I recommend it to all middle grade readers." ~ Laurie C., Amazon, 5 Stars
"The adventures these future Young Knights of the Round Table experience in their quest to save their friend are filled with the fantasy and adventure story elements that children love to read. There's a villain, secret passages in castles, swordplay, and even a witch. And with King Arthur's appearance, astonishing secret identities being revealed, and a happy ending, what more could anyone want in a good read?" ~ Tyler T., Amazon, 5 Stars
"This was a great book! I liked all of the action and excitement in it. Ms. Carpinello wrote this book really well and it was very appropriate for kids even though it deals with fighting and a wrongfully accused person. Ms. Carpinello described the time period really well, I felt like I was a knight in medieval times! I really love that the story features a bit of King Arthur legends in it! The ending had a couple fo great twists that had me totally surprised!." ~ Erik @ This Kid Reviews Books, 5 Stars.

Kid Lit Blog Hop #24: Another Post Office Book Review He He...

Welcome back to the Kid Lit Blog Hop #24

Today, we have another #POST OFFICE BOOK REVIEW

( I know, I know, my crowd of now 4 followers are cheering)

We have only just come back from our busy week in Brisbane and are a touch tired with all our socialising and attending the Brisbane writers festival and meeting a real Aussie agent, ha ha, I digress, and of course, we have another absolute jem from our budget booksellers.

The Best Cow In Show
by Andy Cutbill and Russell Ayto

http://amzn.com/0007316089

Description From Amazon:

Hilarious sequel to The Cow That Laid an Egg Marjorie the cow is terribly excited. She's going to enter her daughter, Daisy, in the Baby Cow Contest. Daisy has been a very special cow ever since the day that she surprised everyone by hatching out of an egg! Marjorie feels sure that Daisy will win, hooves down. But the other mothers are starting to talk! Daisy isn't quite like the other babies; she's small and feathery, and she can't even chew the cud yet. Is there something Marjorie should know? There are plenty of surprises in store for Marjorie the cow in this hilarious follow-up to 'The Cow That Laid an Egg', introducing handsome new character, Derek the bull!

Our Review:
Once again the toddler is drawn into another great book with awesome illustrator Russell Ayto. We became a fan after reading another book he illustrated, "The Love Bugs". The bright blue cover, with a bunch of cows on it were a hit. Funnily, this is the second book we have read with a cow named Marg or Margorie, clearly a very popular name in the paddock. He He.

Gigi's favourite line:
"One morning Marjorie the cow woke with a jolt, bang bang."
The farmers wife was putting up a poster for a baby contest and all the mother cows are going to enter their babies.
Marjorie knew that Daisy was special the moment she hatched from an egg. The illustrations on this page are hilarious as we see news clippings of the momentous occasion. Until now we didn't realise this was actually the sequel, he he. So all the mummy cows start teaching their babies to swish their tales and trot around the paddock but poor Marjorie can't get Daisy to pay attention.  For some reason she is too busy with the chickens.
The time arrives for the Farmers wife to judge. When she reaches Daisy, something very unfortunate happens. Daisy spies a worms, wiggling in the Farmer's wife's hat which she promptly gulps down. All of a sudden, the Farmers wife realises that Daisy is in fact, A CHICKEN.
Well, all the mummy cows are in hysterics, but Marjorie is not perturbed. She knows that Daisy is not like the other babies, but she is Marjorie's and she loves her.
Enter Derek the Bull who saves the day, by slapping a ribbon on Marjorie, proclaiming she is the best mummy cow in show.

I just love this book, not just because of the illustrations but for the quirky and simple message. We may not all conform to the worlds standards of what is beautiful, but with awesome mothers like Marjorie, we can find our place in the world. Well, maybe it isn't that deep, but that is how I am going to portray it to Gigi.

We give it 5 hand prints of toddler approval.

Happy hopping folks

Tomato and Pea: Blog Tour

Book description

“For years the evil villain Wintergreen had tried to destroy super crime-stopper, Tomato and his sidekick, Pea, and take over planet Oarg. In a plan gone wrong, Wintergreen traps himself along with his arch-nemesis in a runaway rocket ship that crashes on a strange planet called “EAR-TH”. Now these perennial enemies must learn to work together to survive the dangers on this strange world. Hungry birds, enormous snakes and the giant inhabitants of EAR-TH stand between this brawling bunch of aliens and finding a way home.”

My Review:
Tomato wins an all inclusive space cruise to a fabulous destination ( he he ominous sounding) so he decides to take his best friend Pea and his other two comrades Skew and Poppy. Little did they know, if was merely a ruse, by their arch nemesis Wintergreen and his evil cronies. He he, I love the characters and names from the get go. I love that narrative style, like you see so often in animation which is just what kids like to read.  The descriptions are really vivid and the glossary at the back made it so easy to adjust to this new world of  Oarg. The author has a great imagination that comes across so well on the page, but what I love more than anything was the use of humour. As mentioned in the reviews prior to mine, the author is 11 years old and the humour is spot on to what kids in that age group would find funny.

Here are my some random lines, just to show you some of the comedy value:

"Wintergreen and Spike wore mustaches and Pye wore glasses that made it look like he had two eyes instead of one." Love it

"Skew replied, "That's great Poppy, but today is not Saturday, so it's not time for his shower."

"The minions at their work terminals must be doing something top secret, because the commander keeps SHUSHING them and won't allow them to communicate with each other"  The Smidges take on the goings on in the Library that they landed in on Ear-th. Hilarious...

This was a quick and totally clean read, which as we have discussed so many times that kids love to be entertained and it doesn't take 500 pages to do it.  I think this would be great as a read aloud so that the fantastic humour of the book can be demonstrated by the reader to the listeners.
Huge congratulations to the author, and I see there is room for a sequel, he he. Stay tuned for the next adventures of Tomato and Pea.

One final note, I totally agree with MotherDaughterBookReviews in a previous review. I like the cover, it is sharp and eye catching, but I want to know what Tomato and Pea look like. That is certainly the feedback I hear time and again for middle grade books that you must allow the child to visualise the character.  I happen to know that the author is quite a fantastic illustrator so I would encourage him in the second edition, to put his wonderful talent to his covers too.

A thoroughly enjoyable story that will sure to entertain.  I would recommend to ages 6-8

5 Stars

Kid Lit Blog Hop #23:The Mysterious Case Of The Missing Honey

Welcome back to the Kid Lit Blog Hop #23

Hurrahhh Spring is here. ( Hang on, I know I know, you are thinking, no its not, its Autum, well not at the bottom of the world......he he)

Finally after hearing all your glorious tales of summer fun, we have hit spring and we are in sunny Brisbane visiting my folks.

We are very busy this week, so we haven't had time for an indepth review but I have made a recent trip to the POST OFFICE

Today, we have a treat for my three loyal fans of the post office review ( you know who you are) With out further ado, here is Post Office Book Review I have lost count.

( for my anyone who has never read an illustrious Post Office Book Review, our local post office has discounted books. Here is another jem)

The Mysterious Case Of The Missing Honey
By Claire Freedman and Holly Swain

http://amzn.com/1862337861

Description from the back cover
Someone is stealing Mr Bear's honey. But catching the villain  is proving tricky... Can Inspector Clueless and his sidekick, Sniff-It-Out, outwit the sweet-toothed villain and solve this most sticky of crimes?

First Page

"It was a busy Monday at the police station. Telephones were ringing, computers were computing. Tring Tring.
Inspector Clueless picked up his phone for the tenth time that morning.

Our REVIEW

You can never really tell what the toddler is going to love. The illustrations in this one drew her in, but she loves the story too. Hilarious to hear a toddler saying, "lets check out the crime scene," or something slightly garbled like that.

Kids love repetition and each day we return to the police station for the same line above just with a different day. Gigi loves that.
My favourite is when they examine the books for the suspects.  "Fingers The Frog and Nabbit The Rabbit" stand out, so Inspector Clueless and Sniff, go to sniff it out.
Well, I am not going to tell you what they find but it is hilarious.
Just when the case is looking like it has completely stumped Inspector Clueless, Sniff finds another clue and they solve the case.

Well, you know my love for all things mystery and a picture book mystery, I LOVE IT and Gigi does too.

Once again that magic of the post office has not failed us.

Happy hopping folks.
