Indicated Launch + Prizes

Joining us today is the lovely, quirky and downright hilarious Louisa Clarkson.

Here is what she has to say.... so listen up

Authors Hit Brick Wall When It Comes to Promotion

Things have changed in the publishing industry over the past decade, and today most authors must promote themselves to get their books noticed by readers. But promoting a book is never easy, especially for self-published authors or small press authors. They don’t have the backing of a big publisher; they compete against hundreds of thousands of books published every year, and many readers are hesitant to try new authors and stick with authors they know. So how do authors attract readers?

These are the issues Louisa Clarkson faced when researching ways to promote her children's fantasy novel, The Silver Strand, and that’s why she created the concept of Indicated, a place where authors help promote each other. "Authors are readers too,” she says, “when they find a good book, they tell their family, friends and colleagues, thus promoting a book to new readers.”

Indicated is a pay-it-forward promotional and educational tool, offering self-published and small press authors the chance to gain exposure to new readers through features and reviews. It also provides ongoing resources that will strengthen marketing endeavors and encourage feedback that will improve an author's writing craft. It’s a place to meet and socialize with other authors, perhaps even critique partners. “These activities,” says Clarkson, “are designed to stimulate word of mouth promotion, create spikes in sales, reviews and drive traffic to authors sales pages. This may boost a book’s ranking, get it seen by more buyers and gain additional recommendations to other customers.”
Clarkson runs Indicated from her home office, accompanied by Delta — the Maltese cross Shih Tzu — perched on the royal seat (desk chair) beside her. Louisa builds upon her experience as an Environmental Engineer and Project Manager by studying courses in creative writing and book PR and marketing.

And now for the good stuff...

The Christmas Owl: Book Blast

The Christmas Owl by Angela Muse

Title: The Christmas Owl Author: Angela Muse Illustrator: Helen H. Wu Publication Date: November, 2013 Publisher: Independent - 4eyesbooks Number of pages: 36 Recommended age: 3+

Summary

A Barred owl becomes injured and must ask others for help. He promises to give back to those who have a generous heart and he is true to his word. Also check out Lil Glimmer, The Nutt Family: An Acorny Adventure, The Pig Princess, The Bee Bully, Eager Eaglets: Birds of Play, Cactus Charlie, Suzy Snowflake and Monsters Have Mommies by this author.
My Review: This is a lovely book about kindness and helping someone in need even when it doesn't suit you. Owl is hurt and can't fly home, so he petitions the animals in the forest to let him stay in their homes for just one night each, while he mends. Each animal is a bit apprehensive, as we know that Owls with their big talons can be quite the predators, but the animals share their homes and food. Owl finally heals and on Christmas Eve, returns to thanks each animal with gift perfectly suited to them. Thus begins a tradition of the Christmas Owl, as he visits his friends each year with a gift, to remember the kindness they showed in his time of need.  I really enjoyed the Christmas Owl, with its old time illustrations and gentle message.  Another lovely book by Angela Muse that I will definitely recommend for Christmas.

It was hard always trying to make new friends, but I discovered I had a knack for writing. I began writing poetry in high school and really enjoyed expressing myself by using pen and paper. After becoming a Mom in 2003, I continued my storytelling to my own children. In 2009 I wrote and published my first children's book aimed at toddlers. In 2012 I am set to release several more children's books. Check out what I'm working on by visiting my children's book blog. Writing is such a wonderful creative process and I look forward to sharing more of my stories with lots of new little readers!

My Review:

What a delightful read. A hilarious glimpse into the mind of one super smart cat and her precocious pet partner Stanley.

I love the conversation between the two and found myself laughing out loud on many occasions throughout the book.

My favourite Quote from Katrina von Cat The Master of Wisdom and Knowledge: "She believed cats had the best taste of any animal in the entire world. She would not dare say the entire universe because aliens are much better at interior designing." Priceless!!!!

The Pet Paper depicting the "Best In Show" for Hampster, Guinea Pig, Dog and Cat of which Stanley and Katrina proudly were disqualified from is so fabulous.

This is book is actually in its second edition now, with the addition of some fabulous illustrations, like this.
Watch this space for this author folks, I am sure she will dazzle us again some time soon.

Kid Lit Blog Hop #27: Gerald Hawksley Books

Welcome to the Kid Lit Blog Hop #27
Today, I have some very quirky books to rave about, he he.
I first found Gerald Hawksley books during a free download of

Description from Amazon:

Another silly rhyming picture book for children from Gerald Hawksley!
DO say "please", if you'd like some cheese.
DON'T attempt to juggle bees.
DO remember where you keep your toes.
DON'T balance an elephant on your nose.
Packed with completely useless advice and jolly illustrations, this charming rhyming picture book is a simple, silly guide to life, which will enlighten and entertain silly children (and silly adults) everywhere!
And DO see if you can spot the mouse on every page!

Well, I can say that this silly rhyming picture book was a hit in our house from the first moment we read it.
How could one pass up useless advice for silly children as opposed to silly advice for children, LOL, I love it.  That is just the kind of humour that Gerald Hawksley seems to have and the illustrations are so eye catching.

But that is not all, we loved this one so much we decided to purchase another.

http://amzn.com/B004WOVW0M
Description from Amazon:

A nonsensical rhyming ABC Kindle book for kids featuring silly monsters, from the amblemoose to the zebozoo, not forgetting the spotty socksniffer (who sniffs socks with spots), the tea-toad (who hides in cracked teapots), the mouldy moop (who menaces mild-mannered mice) and the nasty nonk (who's never very nice).

Really the description says it all. This is a truly silly book with some ingeniously silly ways of teaching children the alphabet. I wish I could post some illustrations here as they are just so clever. My favourite letters would be "Q is for the Qweeple, who sits on quilts and quivers." and "R is for the Ratatoon who resides in rural rivers."
Gigi just loves this book and I have heard her repeating some of the silly animals. After reading so many bland and boring ABC books, this goes down as one of our all time favourites and I think it is a huge achievement on Gerald Hawksleys part to come up with something unique.

So, does it end there, well, of course it doesn't, he has written loads of books, so our next purchase was...,

Description from Amazon:
A Silly Monsters rhyming counting picture book for kids.

One sniffly grumpwuzzle scratches his nose.
Two giggling fluffwimples wiggle their toes.

A companion picture book to Gerald Hawksley's Silly Monsters ABC.
Count along with silly monsters from one sniffly grumpwuzzle to twenty silly bumblerabbits.

Which silly monster do you like the best?

We can't decide we love them all. LOL. I can safely say we have become fans and will certainly be making our way through all of Gerald's books to purchase.

I wanted to do an interview with Gerald as you know I do love to stalk people on twitter then make them guest on my blog, but I couldn't find out very much about Gerald at all, not even a contact on his blog. Never mind....Maybe he will read this post one day and give us a shout LOL.

And just one more thing before we go hopping around the other blogs.

I am proud to announce that I am a

What is it you ask.  The lovely and very talented Tara Lazar, author of "The Monstore" which we have reviewed on this very blog, he he, started this initiative about 5 years ago, where for the month of November, you commit to coming up with a new picture book idea every day for the entire month.

If you are keen to get involved, hop on over to

http://taralazar.com/piboidmo/

I have kept to schedule so far, although some of my ideas may be considered bad taste LOL, but that is the nurse in me.

Here's one that I know will never make it to print, but did give me a chuckle.
"No Peanuts In My Playground by Ana Phylaxis"  LOL I know I know, if that is all I have come up with then I better get cracking.

To infinity and beyond with a red crayon I say, he he, happy hopping folks.

Shadow of Atlantis: Blog Tour and Review

The Shadow of Atlantis Blog Tour Button

About the Book

Title: The Shadow of Atlantis (Shadows From the Past, Book 1)
Author: Wendy Leighton-Porter
Year Published: 2012
Publisher: Mauve Square Publishing
Pages: 196
Recommended Age: 8+
Summary (Amazon):
Ten-year-old twins Joe and Jemima Lancelot have no idea why their parents have disappeared, but a mysterious old book which had belonged to their father holds the answer… and so begins an unusual quest to discover the truth. Together with Max, their remarkable Tonkinese cat, and Charlie from next door, the children embark on an epic adventure, travelling back in time to the lost city of Atlantis. Once there, however, they soon run into problems. Can they save the people of Atlantis from the disaster which is about to destroy their land forever? And will they find their way back to the safety of their own time before it’s too late?

My Review:
We follow the adventures of two ten-year-old twins, forced to go and stay with their Uncle Richard due to their parents mysterious disappearance. With a gold necklace the only link to their parent's whereabouts, Jemima and Joe are suitably devastated by their by their predicament. Soon after their arrival, they befriend their neighbour Charlie, who is a little on the small side and prone to the taunts of the school bullies. When a strange book and some odd trinkets reveal a portal to a time that no longer exists, the children are excited for an adventure. They soon discover they have stumbled into the ancient mythical city of Atlantis. Their cat Max somehow follows them through, the portal, and the four friends find themselves taken in by a little girl called Varna's family.
The friends enjoy learning about this new and exotic place, but unfortunately they have attracted some unwanted attention from the Temple priests, especially since they are not the first visitors to Atlantis. The children realise that Atlantis's is due for some kind of disaster and they do everything they can to convince their new adoptive family that they must leave, or risk perishing. The unwanted attention, lands them in the prison cells at the hands of the sinister priests, but more surprises are in store for the friends. I won't give the ending away, so you will just have to read it yourself. In an exciting turn of events, the children find their way to safety, but not without a new resolve, to do everything in their power to find their missing parents. Thus concludes the first of many great adventures that Jemima, Joe, Charlie and Max embark upon in the Shadows From The Past series.

This was a great book, with characters that you could really grow to love immediately. The children are caring and supportive or each other, with just a hint of mischief, which Ms Porter writes so wonderfully. Their desire to help their new adoptive family, reveals things about themselves that they never realised and in turn, gives them new courage and resolve to find their parents. The Priests in the tale were quite sinister and nasty so I would suggest children aged 10+ would most enjoy this tale.  It was even paced with enough high's and low's to keep my attention, and I would highly recommend this lovely series to middle graders and I am excited for the next in the series.

About The Author, Wendy Leighton-Porter

Wendy Leighton-Porter, AuthorDividing my time between homes in England and South-West France, I live with my husband Simon and our two beautiful Tonkinese cats. I spent 20 years as a teacher of French, Latin and Classical studies, but now write books for children instead of teaching them. The Shadow of Atlantis is the first book in a series of 15 planned time-travel stories, featuring 3 children and, unsurprisingly, a rather special Tonkinese cat. Having recently completed number #7, The Shadow of the Norman Arrow (coming soon!), I’m currently working on the eighth book in the series.
As I take my young readers on a magical mystery tour through the past, I’m also hoping that my love of history, myth and legend will rub off on them too. Personally, I’m enjoying the journey so much, I don’t ever want it to end! Why not come along with me for the ride?

The Princelings of the East: Blog Tour + Giveaway

The Princelings of the East by Jemima Pett

Today I am delighted to join The Princelings Of The East
Blog Tour

About the Book:

Title: The Princelings of the East (Princelings Trilogy, Book 1)
Author: Jemima Pett
Year published: originally published 2011
Publisher: Princelings Publications
Number of pages: 103
Recommended age: 10+
Summary (Amazon):
The Princelings of the East is the first of a trilogy telling of the adventures of Fred and George. When the King's Birthday feast is ruined by an unnatural power drain, our Princeling heroes leave their scientific experiments to set out in search of answers. They encounter the enigmatic businessman Hugo, the impressive Prince of Buckmore, the wise Lady Nimrod, the irrepressible barkeeper Victor, but find themselves threatened by those with vested interests. The scene shifts from a rural, feudal setting to the towers and heights of the curious Isle of Hattan, but where, or when, are they? Time is of the essence in solving this puzzle, and our heroes must keep their wits sharp and their heads clear if they are to survive. Suitable for good readers aged 10 and over, The Princelings of the East is a fantasy adventure with the charm of the Wind in the Willows in a world reminiscent of Anne MacCaffrey's Pern.

 My thoughts:

I have reviewed three of Ms Pett's books and I would have to say, she corners the market in intrigue.
Here are the links to check out my reviews.

Today we are delighted to have Ms Pett
Join us for an interview:

1. When did you first start writing your book and when did you finish?

I think I had the idea in January 2009 and started writing it in the May or June. Once I started writing I couldn’t stop until I’d got to the ‘what happened next?’ stage. It was less than 30,000 words when I finished that first draft, but I don’t think it took me much more than a week. There were a lot of late nights. Revising it, editing it, getting it ready to send it out to an agent once I’d been told I should publish it - that took over a year. Since I’ve just revised it, maybe it is never finished, really.

2. As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up? What inspired you to choose to write books?

It changed from day to day, show jumper, nun, nurse, rock star, explorer. By the time I was in the decision making time at school I had no idea what I wanted to do - ‘something useful’. My subjects at school were mainly science based so I never thought I’d be a writer, that was just something I did, like painting. I didn’t really find out what I wanted to do till I was nearly thirty, and I didn’t actually change my career and do it for another ten years. When I finally stopped doing that full-time, I started writing the books and now that seems to be a full-time job.

3. What advice would you give someone aspiring to write a children’s book?

Read lots of children’s books. There is a huge range. Mine are in the ‘advanced reader’ category, partly because that’s what I wanted to read when I was a kid. I’m not secure in knowing what this audience wants or needs, though, and sometimes I read advice on sites that I think is far too protective. Different cultures have different standards. You need to be aware of that and know who you are writing for.
4. How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?

I know I went and told Victor. Whether I gave him a cuddle or not I can’t remember. As he was on his own then (Fred died ten days before it was first published), I expect I did. I may have gone out and got a bar of chocolate!

5. Can we expect more books from you in the future?

Oh, I think so... (grins) The fifth book in the series is now out for all eReaders; the sixth was drafted at Camp NaNoWriMo in July. I think there are only about three more Princelings books though. A pile of other ideas are waiting to get out, and may get written before the next Princelings book.

6. What are some of your favourite books from when you were a child and did any of these inspire you when writing your books?

I usually cite Wind in the Willows as a huge influence and it is. I know anthropomorphism is frowned on, but detractors haven’t met my guinea pigs. I was pony mad so read all the books I could find in the library, and saved up my birthday book tokens for the Jill books, by Ruby Ferguson, which I still have. I also liked adventure stories, and from around ten to twelve I loved all the school stories, Mallory Towers, the Chalet School, and so on. I think most of the stories I remember best are ones involving the lives of animals in the wild, often in conflict with nasty humans!

7. What is your favorite book of all-time (adult)?

The Lord of the Rings. I often skip a lot of the Gollum bits though, these days. At one time I read all the Strider bits, every year!

8. If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?

A toolbox (with tools and nails), plenty of string, and Captain Jack Sparrow.

9. If you were a superhero what would your name be, what would be your super-power, and what would be your kryptonite?

I think I’d like to be Sand-devil. My superpower would be to attract or repel golfballs from bunkers (traps) so that the undeserving got their just rewards. And the deserving didn’t go in them, of course. The Kryptonite would be weedkiller.

10. If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?

“Snorkelling with guinea pigs – the woman who learnt a lot about many things, but never went into any of them too deeply.”
I might write it :D

Well, that was loads of fun. Thanks so much for joining us Ms Pett.

Kid Lit Blog Hop #25: Hairy Maclary

Welcome Back to the Kid Lit Blog Hop #25

Today, I have been pondering some books that Gigi has recently become in love with. Now I don't know if they are renowned in other parts of the world, but in Australia the

Hairy Maclary From Donaldson's Dairy Books
by Lynley Dodd
are pretty popular.  Today I am going to share them with you.

Description From Amazon:

With cumulative rhymes and sunny ink and watercolor illustrations, this international favorite chronicles the escapades of our hero Hairy and his crew of five kooky canines. Lynley Dodd's books have sold over 2 million copies worldwide.

So there you go, they are known world wide so maybe I am just late to the party.

We follow the delightful Hairy Maclary who lives in Donaldsons dairy.
( dairy means the shop in NZ speak)

"Out of the gate, and off for a walk",
In this first book, every page depicts a new character to join Hairy on his adventure, like Bottomly Potts, all covered in spots, (Dalmation)  Bitzer Maloney, all skinny and bony (Greyhound), Hercules Morse as big as a horse,( not sure what he is but he is big) schnitzel von crum, with a very low tum ( basset hound) etc, you get my drift.

Mostly Hairy Maclary just leads all the other dogs around but every time one of the dogs is mentioned, the author uses their whole name, which creates a great rhythm and repetition. I am just starting to notice how much Gigi responds to these kinds of books.

This is the first in a whole series, that introduces us to the delightful antics of Hairy Maclary and the other animals in his hood. Here are some of the other books Gigi loves in the series.

The illustrations are quite endearing, so it is not hard to see why the kids fall in love with Hairy Maclary, coupled with the delightful Rhythm and Rhyme throughout the books.

But that's not all.  I was searching for some stock images and I found the official website. It has the most awesome downloadables, for everything you need if you want to have your own Hairy Maclary themed kids party, or even just colouring pages.

Sir Princess Petra's Talent: Blog Tour and Review

Welcome to Sir Princess Petra's Talent Blog Tour
By Dianne Mae Robinson

We are so delighted to be back joining in this blog tour and reviewing Dianne's sequel.

For anyone who missed our review of book one, hop on over:

Description:

Sir Princess Petra has already proven she is a kind and noble knight. This, however, does not please the king and queen---they want her to behave like a princess and forget this
silly knight nonsense of hers! But when the king writes a new rule in the royal rule book that requires her to attend Talent School and acquire a princess talent certificate or suffer the spell of the royal magician, Petra, reluctantly, agrees to go. But who could have guessed what Sir Princess Petra’s Talent would be?

Our Review:

We journey back to the land of Pen Pieyu, with the delightful Sir Princess Petra. I really like that Ms Robinson took the time to familiarise a new reader with Petra's antics from book 1.
There have been many celebrations since Petra's momentous taming the fire breathing dragon Snarls, who subsequently has become the Royal Barbeque expert. I love it. he he. But once again our brave Petra finds herself up against the Royal Rule Book.  The kind and queen in a desperate attempt to rid their young princess of all this silly Knightlyness, decree that Petra must obtain a talent from the Land Of Lost Donkeys.
Well, Petra is not perturbed. Off she goes and along her journey she is challenged by a knight with quite the penchant for pink. He is very intent on preventing her from obtaining her talent certificate. Why, I can  not tell you, but it is quite hilarious. The delightful Petra always finds a way to befriend her foes and the odd pink knight, whom is called Prince Duce Crablips accompanies her to Talent School. There King Asterman does his best to get Petra to do some very silly talents like Etiquette, or Crochet, or Fainting Fast, or Cloak Sewing or worst of all in our fiercely independent princess's opinion, Preparing To Be Engaged School. Yuk! (That was from Petra not me he he)
But Petra can't be hoodwinked the way everyone who encounters Bograt the Bogwitch is. No Petra will not have a bar of all those other silly things, she wants to attend Writing School.
Petra sets to work and with her vivid imagination she writes a most excellent poem. Only after 100 pulled faces, does King Asterman ascends to give her her Writing Certificate.
Hurrah, Petra has obtained her talent, but on the way, the adventure in her spirit rears up and Petra convinces Prince Duce and Snarls to accompany her into The Vast Wilderness.
There they meet the furry Ganutes, who reveal to Petra that she is infact not the first to venture into their lands. The irrepressive Bograt The Bogwitch has gone before them. Well, this is great news to Petra, as that is one of the Royal Rules that entitles the person to become a Knight of The Royal Court, imagine it.
So Petra returns to her kingdom and insists that Bograt be given the title she has well earned, and a great celebration is in order. But not before Petra must display her talent.
Here is the most enchanting part of the story.
Petra tells a beautiful tale, taught to her by her Nanny before she went off seeking fortune. Petra mesmorises them all with her tale and thus, the art of story telling has returned to the Land Of Pen Pieyu.

This was a wonderful story, where we see Petra's beautiful personality develop even further. I absolutely adore Petra's innocent antics, making this a super clean and appropriate read for children aged 5-8. I loved the story that Petra told, it was magical and I can definitely see a spin off book., hehe. The illustrations throughout the book again are enchanting.
We loved it, and give this second book in Ms Robinson's tales, 5 stars.
