"Maisy and the Missing Mice is a fun chapter book featuring a smart and sassy tween girl as the title character; a solid and interesting plot featuring age-appropriate intrigue and suspense; and some terrific writing that carries the reader on a journey as a detective uncovering clues and solving the mystery of who stole the missing mice. Time Square: The Shift by S.W. Lothian: Book Launch and Review

This just in: new release April 9 2014

Book Description:

Imagine this. Your dad is a part-time archaeologist who has a tendency to discover things. One day, he comes home from an expedition with a crusty old relic, and dumps it in the basement. You’d probably think everything would be fine and dandy, but that’s where you’re wrong. Because that’s precisely when all the trouble started.

It’s 1930, and Lewis and Eva Hudson are a couple twin teens with just such a dad. Then, on a chilly wintery day in Washington D.C., the three of them mysteriously disappear into thin air, without a trace. Throw in a weird and mysterious rival with a point to prove, add a looming disaster that threatens to break time itself, and pretty soon they’re smack bang in the front seat of a roller-coaster to doomsville.

Time Square | The Shift is an edge-of-your-seat time-travel adventure that’s full of action and plenty of humour. It’s sure to leave you begging for a breather. Join Dr Rex Hudson, his two teen kids Lewis and Eva, and a whole cast of wonderful and wacky characters as they try to fix the unfixable.

Time Square is an exciting new series from the author of The Golden Scarab, The Cursed Nile and The Fallen Pharaoh. If you loved the Quest series, then you'll love this new series even more.
Before we get started, here is a little picture of the cast, he he

My Review

We begin our adventure when we join Dr. Rex Hudson and his research assistant Leesa on the top of Machu Picchu. They are on the precipice of a discovery after studying the notes of a Hiram Bingham, a noted American Explorer. When Rex and Leesa follow the clues, it leads them to a mysterious stone obelisk.
Little do they know, that removing the obelisk and transporting it home, will upset time itself.
Upon Dr Hudson's return, he begins to study the obelisk, with the help of his precocious twins, Lewis and Eva. All of a sudden the threesome find themselves being sucked into the mysterious object they are studying.
The next thing they know, they find themselves in Time Square, a seemingly magical place where every point of time passes through. Unfortunately, in their abrupt exit they managed to leave behind young Thomas.  The trio are desperate to get home, when they encounter Charlie Tingleton, Director Of The Department of Breaches.
The Hudson's learn very quickly that their removal of the obelisk, set about a change of events called the SHIFT,  and that the end of time is at stake. Many travellers who were en-route, during the SHIFT are also lost in time.
From here on in, we meet a quirky cast of characters, including a secretary highly skilled at alliteration, and The Governor a straight talking matriarch of Time Square who had me giggling every page she entered.

The author has so generously provided a few of those quirky moments in pictures hehe

The Hudson's realise they are actually trapped in Time Square and returning home will be harder than they expected.  Their mission is to get back to their own time, then embark on the arduous task of returning the Obelisk to its resting place in Machu Picchu.
Simple plan really, expect an old colleague of Dr Hudson who is hell bent on fame and fortune, steals the Obelisk, in the hope the he can finally steal the rather successful Dr.'s thunder.
Dr. Hudson becomes the Director of The Department Of The Lost and the kids volunteer to become rescuers.
Here Lewis and Eva join up with two other volunteers to learn the ropes in Max Wells and Razor Sharpe. They all begin their training, when more news comes to light and it is apparent that the rescue mission must begin asap. Hence, Operation Slingshot begins.
The kids are off on a mission to Roswell New Mexico in 1947, stay tuned for their further adventures.
Meanwhile, a bumbling time agent is dragged out of retirement to solve the mystery of who stole the obelisk from the Hudson's, enter James Blonde.... I have a feeling he is going to make me chuckle on each page too.

And thus begins another adventure series!!!!
Note I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

Top of his dream list was to be an animator. The Buzz

"Every book by this author is amazing. My son, who is very picky has bought every book. He has read them without putting them down and even asked me to organize having Kevin come to his school. Kevin, the Author is a person doing what he loves to do and it shows in his work and his interactions with the kids. You will not regret your purchase!" ~ 5 Star Review, Adina F., Amazon

"My 4th grade daughter is obsessed with dragon books. When I discovered Diego's Dragon, I jumped at it--and now Kevin Gerard is her new favorite author! For a voracious reader like my daughter, that is the highest of compliments, especially considering her love for Erin Hunter's Warrior Cats series. Her enthusiastic commentary about book one, and her pleading for book 2, had me eager to read it for myself. All I can say is . . . my daughter was right. For any fans of middle grade adventure or fantasy or dragons or boy books or epic awesomeness, this is the perfect story." ~ 5 Star Review, S. O'Donnell, Amazon

"Kids who like dragon stories will love this adventure series. Those who liked Harry Potter, kids and adults, will like this series. I truly believe the Diego’s Dragon series will have readers anticipating new releases and then devouring the books immediately upon release. Spirits of the Sun is a great book for boys, and girls—and adults. Without gushing too much, I believe Spirits of the Sun is one of the best books I have read. If the series holds up, I will be its number one fan, though many others will claim that title. Kids, get this book." ~ 5 Star Review, Sue M., Amazon

* Finalist in the Pacific Northwest Writers Association 2013 Literary Contest *

*  My Review *

When Peter's twelve birthday reveals a long lost uncle and a mysterious letter, a dangerous quest follows. Peter is a loner, lives with his gran, never knew his mother and until his uncle Dominic arrived, never knew about the existence of ..... Dragons.  Those mythical creatures everyone knows are just stories made up for little kids. Or are they.... When Dominic tells Peter he is part of an order called the Dragon Defence League and needs his help in retrieving an egg of a very rare dragon, Peter jumps in.  His is however, unaware of the danger he will face, or the number of  lives that will be affected for both human and dragon, and ultimately that the mystery of his mother's disappearance will deepen.

This was a fast paced read from the get go.  Peter joins with two unlikely side kicks in Xana, a strong willed, and very resourceful girl, who Peter happens upon in the jungles of Mexico when his uncle goes missing. Peter manages to escape with the egg, but he soon realises there are eyes watching him everywhere.  The egg draws the attention of danger thugs and thieves, all vying for the much sought after egg. When the egg hatches, Peter and Xana are desperate to return it to the mother dragon, but that turns out to be more dangerous than the thugs.  With the help of a young orphan called Mario, Peter and Xana fight of the thugs and Peter manages to calm the dragon long enough to return the baby to its mother. Peter realises he  can speak to the dragon, but he keeps quiet as some how, he knows that his new found ability is a secret he must guard with his life.  Peter is eventually reunited with Dominic, but truths were spoken to him about his mother during his dangerous quest, truths that he can no ignore. Peter realises he has a destiny he cannot ignore. The Dragon Defence league is in his blood and for Peter the journey continues......

I very much enjoyed this middle grade read but as others have mentioned in previous reviews, there was quite a deal of violence including guns and explosives, which I am very prudish about for middle grade reads.  I therefore recommend this for 10+

I give it 4 Stars.

NB: I received a free copy as part of this blog tour in exchange for an honest review.

More Buzz About the Book

"We read an advance copy of this book on kindle earlier this year and our 5th grade son read it twice and is anxiously awaiting the next book in the series. Great adventure, really kept our interest reading it together at night. This was one of the kids books I most enjoyed reading myself as well. The characters and the plot are well developed, and appealing to a wide range of kids (both genders). The writing is sophisticated but easy to understand, not 'dumbed down' like many kids books. The subject of dragons was so well crafted that it's easy believe that dragons just might exist, after all." ~ 5 Star Review, Leigh A., Amazon
"Reminiscent of the Fablehaven series (with just the right touch of Harry P.) this middle grade book is both an adventure and a pleasure...Fast-paced and full of wonder, this book takes middle grade readers on a vivid journey from the southwestern U.S. to Mexico; where jungles, ancient ruins and local folklore add to the enchantment that Peter finds when he discovers that dragons are in fact, real. As a former elementary school teacher, my strong feeling is that kids will eat this book whole, and then turn to searching for dragon eggs in their own backyards!" ~ 5 Star Review, Grace W., Amazon
"Dragon Defender was an absorbing action packed read! The author pulls you in from the first page and I'm not sorry to say I read it all in the first day. I'm 33 but still! This is a fun book for a chapter a night with your 5 year old (my son is loving it so far) or for yourself. The characters are well developed so you feel like you're really there, and the dragon is so believable. I'd venture so far as to say I had to remind myself that dragons don't really exist.... or do they?" ~ 5 Star Review, MGC, Amazon

Princess Madeline And The Dragon: Blog Tour

Princess Madeline and the Dragon - Tour Button - 3 Kirstin Pulioff

Today we are going to be a little left of centre, as we may have miscalculated our dates a life got in the way.  So instead of the third book, today we are going to review the first book.

http://amzn.com/B00A1Y87P0

 DESCRIPTION FROM AMAZON:

The Kingdom of Soron is known for many things, its rolling landscape, haunting history, fiery sunsets, and its beautiful princess. Princess Madeline woke on her sixteenth birthday to realize that her future had been planned out, a life full of privilege, royalty, and boredom... a life with a husband and knight champion that she did not choose. Using her charm, strength and stubbornness, she defies the King at every turn, determined to keep her freedom on her terms.

Freedom quickly turns to disaster as she finds herself seized by a group of wandering bandits. With the kingdom in turmoil over her capture; her Knight Champion eager to prove himself, a group of dedicated suitors determined to win her hand, and a group of exiled wizards join forces in the hunt to rescue her. Follow Princess Madeline in this adventure full of twists and turns as she tries to find her freedom and answers to her questions about life and love.

OUR REVIEW

Poor Madeline finds herself in an impossible situation. Her 16th birthday approaches and she is expected to marry. Although she is a twin, her brother is not at all expected to marry, which of course creates quite a disparity between the siblings. That kind of double standard would be enough to cause siblings with the best of relationships to falter of that I am certain.    Her father prepares a celebration for her betrothal, and many willing suitors attend in anticipation of the young girls decision.

Madeline's world implodes when she makes a rash decision to leave the safety of the castle, her father the king and brother.  She is captured not long after, and now the very thing that Madeline is running from, is the only thing that may be able to provide her salvation.
When the king discovers Madeline has fled her responsibilities, he is distraught, and will do anything to get her back, even promise her hand to one of the most creeper suitors in the land Prince Paulsen.
Enter a young knight called Daniel, determined and somewhat smitten with Madeline. Each will stop at nothing to find her.
Meanwhile, Madeline isn't helpless, she formulates a plan of escape, which isn't very successful but it was a very good attempt.
When Prince Paulsen's men catch up with the bandits that have captured Madeline, the young girl is bound and gagged, but she manages to secret away, amidst the fight. Finding, only her gown, Prince Paulsen returns to the king with the dreaded new that Madeline is lost to him forever.

Daniel, however, will not give up. He searches and finds her, and brings her home, but not without a club on the head in the process. Madeline, realises, what Daniel has done for her, and would do for her, and her heart begins to open like a rose of first love.
Madeline returns to the King and is welcomed with open arms. She chooses Daniel as her intended, and thus ends the tale and begins the further adventures of Princess Madeline.

I enjoyed this very sweet tale, which felt a mix of a  coming of age, parable of the lost sheep and the prodigal son/daughter.
Madeline's character development was lovely and reminded me also of another book that I loved when I was a teen,  "Chatain's Guardian (Annals of Lystra) by Robin Hardy.

I do feel that his is perhaps an early Young Adult read as I don't feel many 9-12 year olds would be yet interested in the very appropriate love story, but ages 13-16 would find this completely endearing.

My bottom line, I give it 4 stars and am looking forward to the further two books.

Brave New World: What's The Skinny On 2014

HAPPY NEW YEAR FOLKS

I hope you all had a great start to the year.

Gigi and Danny and I had a wonderful time with family and friends, and of course.
ANOTHER

CLUEDO REMATCH

Yep, still losing at cluedo.

Everyone seems to be charting their goals for the year, so I thought, I would too.

So what is on the cards for 2014.....

1. Release my middle grade mystery, Frankie Dupont And The Mystery Of Enderby Manor. Stay tuned for a cover reveal and blog tour.

2. Release the third and final book in my Adventures Of Caramel Cardamom Trilogy, "Stellarcadia" Stay tuned for a cover reveal and blog tour.

3. Attend Supernova Melbourne to try my hand at selling some paperbacks.  I will be sure to post evidence of our costumes, complete with Elf ears.
http://www.supanova.com.au/show-information/melbourne/

4. Attend Book Expo Australia to sell some more paperbacks
http://www.bookexpoaustralia.com/

I am also embarking on a new genre....

Picture Books
To be honest it is the one I love the most, but I haven't felt ready until I did

http://taralazar.com/piboidmo/

This gave me a huge amount of inspiration and as a result I have written 8 Picture Books.

Which brings me to my next venture:

over at http://www.juliehedlund.com/12-x-12/

So it may sound like I am well on the way to my goal of 12 picture books already, but I know I have a lot of work to do just yet.

Last but not least, here is my new years resolution, or maybe it should be a goal.

I WANT TO LAND A PICTURE BOOK AGENT.

That's my plan for 2014.

SO STAY TUNED.......

S Smith: The Seed Savers series (9th and 18th December)

Julie Grasso: Caramel Cardamom series (11th and 22nd December)

Today I have the pleasure of Interview Ben Zackheim...

Hurrahhhh.

Ben is the author of the Shirley Link series.

So Ben...
1. Tell us a little about you.

I'm a former corporate fellow, now reformed. The writing life is my neck of the woods now, and it's been romp so far, let me tell you. I've gone from spreadsheets and status meetings to pirate treasure and elves. My wife and son alternate between loving and hating my new track, depending on how bad the writers block is.

2. How did you come up with ideas for the Shirley Link series
Shirley Link emerged from seething hatred. Healthy, I know! I just do not like the way a lot of modern heroes stumble onto their adventures. Then, many times, they act like they don't want to be inconvenienced by this fantastic journey they're on. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of stories that have these elements. But I felt compelled to write a series with a young protagonist who loves being in the thick of it, who even thrives on it. I also wanted to write a smart girl, someone who embraces her intellect and doesn't care what other people think about her. So Shirley was born!

3. How long does it take you to craft your stories

The writing is the easy part with Shirley. I can finish a first draft in a week, easily. They aren't very long stories, but they take a lot of thought. Any writer who's done a mystery story knows what a delicate string it is that brings the narrative together. Everything needs to feel correct, read clearly and, of yeah, entertain.
It's the third draft that's the toughest and longest. It's also the most fun for me since that tends to be the draft where I spot opportunities to bring Shirley and her friends to life a little more with dialogue, or their random observations on life.
The Camelot Kids is another series I'm working on. Now THAT is a tough one. It's seven years in the making, and still not complete. I've had a lot of false starts with it where I think it's ready and then realize I'm missing the target in a fundamental way. I think the reason for the rough ride is the intricate plot and the sheer size of the story. It is an epic in every sense of the word.

4. Did you have children beta read the story. If so, how did it change the story?
I did. I'm friends with two girls, 10 and 12. They always get a sneak peek and have comments about what makes sense or what doesn't ring true. They're invaluable. I'm not sure how anyone could write for kids without getting their input first. I recently had a reviewer say she would believe that the author of Shirley Link was once a twelve year old girl. I can reassure her that I never was, but I have my beta readers to thank for the accurate tone. My son, 7, is almost old enough to read Shirley Link himself. I cannot wait to hear his suggestions, though I'm sure there'll be a lot of laser guns and decapitations.

5. Tell us about your next book. Did I hear a whisper it would be set in Italy... He he, I hope there are some pizza references...

The newest Shirley Link book just came out 11/29! Shirley Link & The Black Cat has Shirley grow up a little bit. When a lot of people complain about missing small things, Shirley starts to see a pattern. It becomes clear that there are a lot of small robberies going on in town. A young man who is known for getting into trouble is suspect number one, as far as the police are concerned. But Shirley doesn't buy it. As she uncovers clues, the case turns into a rescue mission where the young man and a stray black cat will need her help to stay free.
The Italian book will definitely happen. I went there this summer. No writer escapes the desire to write about Italy after visiting it.

6. Favourite Middle Grade book

I fall squarely in the Harry Potter camp here. I think Rowling tapped into our souls as deeply as Star Wars did, and affected millions of kids in ways we'll see unfold in the next ten years. The series made children want to read more, write more, draw more, be themselves more. Those delicate years of 8-12 were made easier, or at least clearer, to a whole generation of children (and adults with a strong connection to their formative years). It's rare to be alive when such a large storytelling force moves through our culture and changes everything. I feel privileged to have enjoyed the books with so many kids. I'm also thankful for the great conversation-starter. If you ever find a kid who's hard to reach, Harry Potter is like an On button.
Out of the entire series, I love (and dread) The Half-Blood Prince the most.

7. Chocolate or Caramel ( you know why I am asking)

Since I also train trees in my spare time (and worry that my parents can read my mind), the answer is clearly Caramel.

8. If you could go somewhere in time, where would you go?

Sixth floor, Book Depository, Dallas, Texas, 1963. I'd have a throw-down with Oswald! Take him down with some sloppy, learned-from-TV jujitsu, grab his scope and make sure no one's on the grassy knoll. Pure machismo in all its glory. I hope I haven't horrified everyone...

9. Advice to new and independent authors?

Don't answer questions about time travel.
Also, you are not your audience. It's taken me years to fully grasp that just because I write stories I would like to read does not mean I'm the target audience. Which is good because I'd hate to think that only overweight, middle-aged men who always have one car in the shop are my only readers. So spend some time finding out more about who you want to reach by being honest with yourself about the kind of stories you write. Your writing will improve the more you imagine the audience you're writing for.
If you have questions about who your books appeal to, then try this trick. When you post your next book on Amazon (assuming you do), buy it and then look at the "Thank You for Buying" page. You'll see a list of products that people who bought your books also bought. It can provide some great insights into who is showing interest in your work!
But the best advice I can give to new writers (my fellow independents already know this well) is to limit your time on social networks. Focus! Don't get caught up in the mists of free marketing, as if the right post could catapult your sales. Yes, it's possible, but don't waste your time trying to make it happen. Let it happen naturally. Your time is better spent writing.

The Buzz

Book 1: "Well-written, fast-paced, and entirely appropriate for its target audience (middle grade fantasy), this short but succinct novel (novella? It was maybe a little between a novella and a novel) tells a delightful tale of a naive princess who learns the real meaning of freedom. Kirsten gives her characters a sufficient amount of depth to make them genuinely likeable, and she leaves room for much, much more to come." ~ 5 Star Review, Ally, Amazon
Book 1: "An inspiring thought provoking, and wonderfully written fairy tale by an author who transports us to a time in our imagination where everything is magical and possibilities are real." ~ 5 Star Review, kathyls, Amazon
Book 2: "Fairy tales are filled with knights and princesses and castles and a special magical feel that takes the reader far, far, away into another world, another place, another time. The Battle for Princess Madeline fits the bill to a tee! Author Kirstin Pulioff has created a special feel to the tale of Princess Madeline with her own special talent for using words to paint pictures in our minds." ~ 5 Star Review, Dii, Amazon
Book 2: "The story is well developed and easy to follow. The vivid scenes will transport young readers into the magical world of fairy tales with thrilling characters that have come to life. Another splendid read for young readers! I can hardly wait for a new book, Princess Madeline and the Dragon. " ~ 5 Star Review, Mrs. D., Amazon
Book 3: "The story is engaging on many levels, as is Pulioff's writing, but on this occasion I was mostly drawn into the action and the mystery as how to prevent the worst from happening. This is great entertainment and should do well across a wider age range." ~ 5 Star Review,ChristophFischerBooks, Amazon
Book 3: "Kirstin Pulioff has saved the best for last. 'Princess Madeline and the Dragon' is the final instalment in the 'Princess Madeline Trilogy'. I thought the first two books were finely wrought stories, but this novel surpasses its predecessors. Prophesies, family tragedies, magic and - of course - dragons, combine to produce a tale that is an instant classic. Written with a great deal of charm, 'Princess Madeline and the Dragon' will not disappoint Ms Pulioff's young fans. I look forward to seeing where next her imagination will take this natural storyteller. " ~ 5 Star Review, Diogenes, Amazon
