Kid Lit Blog Hop #31

Welcome Back To The Kid Lit Blog Hop #31

We are excited to bring you two Australian books today for review, by Aaron Blabey

Stanley is a very small person and he hates it. He thinks he is all alone in the world until Eleanor Cabbage arrives new to his school. Eleanor is the tallest person Stanley has ever met. Eleanor hates being tall and teased, and she too feels alone. Each one wishes they had the others problem, and the two odd balls become kindred spirits. They can both face the day, with a friend at their side, and life for Stanley and Eleanor was never the same, but better than ever.

Gigi chose this one from the Library, and I was quite surprised as I expected that the colours of the illustrations would not normally capture a 2 year olds attention.  Of course I was wrong. She loved it from the get go. With a really sweet message, lovably odd characters and uniquely glum looking illustrations, this has become a huge hit in our house, which made us search out more by this author.

The next one we read was

Description From Amazon:
A delightfully uplifting tale about self-belief, courage, and—above all—the power of friendship. Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley are the best of friends. But they are different in almost every way: Pearl loves solving mysteries and moves rather fast in the world, and Charlie likes taking leisurely baths and watching his flowers grow. So how can Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley be such good friends?

This one also captured Gigi's attention from the first read.  She loves hearing how different the two characters are. And of course, you can't go wrong with characters that have foods as names, I am partial to the odd food name myself in a story as you may well know.
The illustrations are brighter than Stanley Paste, but still in that unique Aaron Blabey style.
We loved this one too, so we are planning our next read....

Description from Amazon: Sunday Chutney is not your ordinary every-day girl. Sunday has lived everywhere and been everywhere. The only problem is this means she is always the new girl at school and she never really has a place to call come. But Sunday doesn't mind, not really. After all, she doesn't care what people think, she loves her own company, she has heaps of imaginary friends, so many important interests that keep her very busy . . . and traveling is so glamorous. What more could Sunday Chutney want?

Another quirky read, that the toddler loved. So far we haven't found a Blabey book we didn't love, so we will keep you posted on our adventures.

If you are after engaging books with quiet themes to encourage your child contemplate the universe, these are your books.

Happy Hopping Folks

  1. I'm often surprised by the books that my 2 year old is drawn to. She's a constant lesson on letting go of assumptions! Books that I think she'll find dull or far too long, she ends up loving. Go figure. I'm really drawn to the cover of the first book myself--it really gives a strong sense of mood. Plus the art is gorgeous--he's got a distinctive style.

Thanks for sharing on the Kid Lit Blog Hop!

  2. All of these books sound great and with special lessons on being oneself, being different and being okay with that. Stanley Paste" attracted me right away because of the title and the cover picture. Seems like I like covers and illustrations that are subdued. Glad I stopped by.
Reading and lovin' it, ~ linda

    1. Thank you Linda, yes he does seem to have a common theme, and they are unlikely covers, but the toddler is obsessed with them lol.

  6. I am in love with the beautiful book covers. I think my daughter would enjoy Stanley Paste. She's very tall for her age and her best friend is very small, much like the characters in the story.

  7. These are adorable. You WOULD like the names with food in them. ;) Gigi is a smart girl with her choices. I like how quirky the characters already appear to be just from your review. I think we would enjoy these picture books. Thanks for sharing, friend, and for hosting the Kid Lit Blog Hop.

  9. It's always hard to predict what our children will be drawn to. Dominic has always gone for the scary, dark covers and Danielle the bright colourful covers. Go figure!! Maybe next week, it will be completely different! Thank you for sharing your book recommendations in the Kid Lit Blog Hop and for hosting once again! :-)
