My Review:
I have to admit I am a huge fan of middle grade mystery. I just love the way the details are revealed slowly, but with just enough intrigue to keep you guessing, but not totally confused. Mr Zackheim has done a great job of achieving this balance in his latest Shirley Link book, "The Black Cat". The whole series is written in first person narrative, which I have to say totally suits this genre, as it keeps the pace fast and engaging.
As we journey with Shirley's every thought and move, we are re-acquainted with old friends and get to know a couple of new enemies, giving us a first hand insight into how the cogs of this sassy teen investigator's mind turns. I absolutely love Shirley's voice and I believe Mr Zackheim has captured just how teens would think and react. I also loved Shirley's use of modern technology to help solve the case. Kids these days are so computer savvy, they would totally appreciate Shirley's methods of deduction.
Once again, I was totally intrigued from start to finish. I highly recommend this to upper middle grade age 12+ and I think kids in their early teens who love a good mystery will thoroughly enjoy this latest instalment in the Shirley Link series. I give it 5 Stars.....
