MY  REVIEW

Andrew the Giraffe is a very tall calf, but with his snow white coat, he feels he doesn't belong. He sets about to find his spots and he happens upon a lady bird.  Andrew asks the little beetle how she got her spots, but when he finds they are kisses from a fairy, he leaves feeling blue. Off he journeys and along the way he meets a leopard. When Andrew asks him how he got his spots the leopard tells him they came from high above, and fell from the sky in the form of raindrops. Poor Andrew, he doesn't know what to do, he continues on, still no closer to finding a way to gain his spots. Next he happens upon an owl, and when he questions her the owl answers that a strong wind blew and in they flew.
Andrew doesn't know how to find his spots, so in despair he lies down upon the ground to take a nap. Little does he know that the sun peaking through the trees bathes him in a golden glow. It tans his skin and his spots begin to show. Andrew awakes the wonderful site and he finally gets his spots.

This has a lovely rhythm and rhyme to it, as we journey along with poor Andrew in his quest for his spots. The water colour illustrations matched this story so beautifully as the simple brush strokes really bring to life how each animal got their spots. We thoroughly enjoyed this simple and sweet story and would recommend it for children aged 3-6.

About the Author: Louise Lintvelt

Louise LintveltI am from South Africa and I live in a city called Pretoria. I am a Chemical Engineer by day and a children’s book writer by night. I am married to a wonderful man and we have a beautiful two year old daughter called Allegra. I love writing stories for my daughter, who is a constant inspiration. I have always loved reading. My childhood was filled with books and you would often find me crouched the corner of my room devouring the pages of my favourite book. I lived for Tuesday mornings as this would bring with it the excitement of a trip to the local library for story hour and the opportunity to take home a new book. I was the local librarian’s worst nightmare. I would arrive a few minutes early to check that she had not mistakenly chosen a book that had already been read in story hour. I was a very bossy three year old with an insatiable appetite for books! This has not really changed much in the last twenty seven years. Dr. Seuss was my absolute favourite and to say that my copy of One, Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish was well read would be an understatement. When it comes to writing, my daughter is my biggest inspiration. I love seeing her face light up with excitement when we sit down to read a book before bedtime. My daughter was fascinated by giraffes after we went on a safari trip in late 2012. This planted the seed for my picture book called How Andrew Got His Spots which is a rhyming adaptation of a story I originally wrote in the third grade. My daughter has since grown into a healthy two year old with a passion for aircraft which was the inspiration for writing Goodnight, Sleep tight, What a Wonderful Flight. I am sure that there are many parents in the world (myself included), who are quite decidedly sick and tired of reading the same favourite picture book night after night. I believe that the words of Oscar Wilde best describe how children should feel about picture books when he said, If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all. Happy Reading!

Kid Lit Blog Hop #41

Welcome back to the Kid Lit Blog Hop #41

We have just returned after a wonderful visit to my home city.  Of course, I visited the local library I grew up in, which I may have mentioned before, has the best selection of picture books.

Laika The Astronaut by Own Davey:

Laika was a stray dog wandering the streets of Moscow
She was lonely and she wished for a family to love her.
Someone took her in, but not for the purpose Laika wished for.
Some Astronauts had a very special job for her.
Laika trained hard until it was time for her mission.
She blasted off into space with the world watching.
She zoomed around the Earth, until something went wrong.
The world thought Laika was lost.
She was one brave dog, that paved the way for space travel.
As no one knows what happened to the little dog in the space ship, the author has chosen his own adventurous and happy ending, he he, but I am not going to tell you what it is. You will have to read it.

The first thing you notice about this book is the fantastic and unique illustrations.

Mostly done in shades of gold, greens and red, which gives it a distinct and eye pleasing journey back to that era. We have read another one of Own Davey's books, and we very much enjoyed the tale, as well as the delightful illustrations.  I think we are fast becoming fans.

You can't help but fall in love with little Laika. We spied this one in the library, and as I am naturally drawn to all things space, and so is my little G, we agree that we must have this one in our home collection.

The end pages have a note about the origin of the story.
On November 3 1957 we learn that Laika was the first animal to orbit the Earth in the Sputnik 2.
Just a few hours later all communication was lost. I did not realise that it was actually really a non fiction story, with a fictional ending until I read the authors notes, but I was not disappointed. I choose to believe that Laika is forever the adventurer that Owen Davey paints.

 My Review

As the sun sets, the busy aircraft are almost ready to finish their day. First passenger airline Clay parks his wheel unloads his passengers and settles in, while fire plane jack, drops his load on the fire on the road. Then crop duster Dan, fertilises the baron land, while air ambulance Andrew lifts an injured hiker saving the day and  Jane the jet does her final pass over the cheering crowd.

Now all the aircraft are ready for bed, its time to say goodnight, sleep tight.

This was a delightful book, with great rhythm and rhyme. There are plenty of teaching moments along the way, as we find out each aircrafts unique and important purpose. The illustrations are comic book style, which I think is totally fabulous. The colours are vibrant and extremely eye catching. You can't help but ponder each page a little longer than usual, as you take in the whole scene, not just the airplanes.

We loved this book and would recommend it to any little airplane enthusiast aged 3-6.
